Flowing Energy
by YY9 Gallery
Location: YY9 Gallery
Artist(s): Simone BOON, Marsha RODDY
Date: 9 Dec 2011 - 16 Jan 2012

YY9 Gallery is pleased to present “Flowing energy”, a joint exhibition featuring new works by Simone Boon and Marsha Roddy. Both artists attempt to express a kind of powerful, dynamic stillness by capturing a flow in time in their series of artworks across media of photography, sculpture and drawing. By doing so, they manage to create an embodiment to express the relativity of entities in space and their relationship with time, space, form and materials.

Simone’s moving ‘portraits’ of young women, being unfrozen from the frame, aim to give a different perspective on the essence of identity. Her photographic experiments are like a search for the beauty that goes beyond one moment in time, thus depicting the changing positions of subjects. The dynamic interplay of light and movement resembles a painting rather than a photograph. The young female models in the works are like brushes that perform painting by their body movements, whilst the mirror reflex camera is like a piece of canvas which allow the artist to capture the visual language of transitions.

Marsha’s works on paper and mixed media works not only explore three-dimensional space, movement, texture, but also look at the fragility of life and celebrate how wonderful every single moment is. In her series of work, the woven intersection, interplay and flux between vertical and horizontal lines are reminiscent of possibility, of probability, as well as of interchange and exchange. Each line may somehow represent an individual person moving through time to create an entire journey; together all of the lines intersect with each other, thus denoting all journeys being connected and interconnected with each other.

Demonstrating Simone and Marsha’s extraordinary depictions of movement, the exhibition reveals the very fascination of both artists and presents a vortex of moving energy to the audience.
