In conjunction with his current exhibition at Blum & Poe, Julian Hoeber has arranged for a series of brief participatory performances, held inside his installation Self-Consciousness Machine.
Hoeber's work, inspired in part by a therapist's office, will become the environment for these one-on-one interactive performances. For a single day only, Jennifer L. Collins, MSW, a practicing psychotherapist and clinical social worker, will be meeting with visitors inside the installation. Each viewer will participate in a direct conversation with Ms. Collins while seated at the center of Hoeber's Self-Consciousness Machine.
Though the conversation is not a therapy session, certain aspects of the therapy process will be represented and elucidated through the performance. With the help of Ms. Collins, the architecture of the piece will create a heightened and altered experience of self-examination.
In addition to working in the field of mental health, Ms. Collins has a background in theater and performance. In the past she has performed in videos by Hoeber and Paul McCarthy, among others. This is the first collaboration in nearly a decade between Ms. Collins and Hoeber.
