Red Birds On A Blue Tree (2008) by Nimchi YUEN
76 x 106 cm
Oil on canvas

I would like to celebrate in what we think and feel with laughter and sarcasm. In the figurative paintings, the striking, often macabre images embody the dreams, desires and contradictions of contemporary life. The figures depicted in the painting are in a state of intensity and are depicted in the moment of climax in their gestures and state of mind. It is their reaction towards life in all its glory using their strength, weaknesses and humor.

The difference of art and decoration is the illustrative factor. A decoration is the illustration of the content. Art is the content itself. Traditionally, aesthetic pleasantry is the purpose of art. Decoration would then be the illustration of beauty. It suggests beauty rather than being it. In my work, I am exploring the representational without the literal translation of the representational in an arbitrary accidental manner. In my work, I tried to explore the thin line of art and the suggestion of representation. I am looking for a visual language, which represents the ambiguity of the modern society and the never changing humanity without the denial with what has happened in the history of art while not being dictated by fashion and temporary tendencies of the art world. My background is from mixed cultures which I take references from and use in a distorted manner to dramatize execution.
The brushstrokes are inspired by Chinese painting. In Chinese painting a line is not just a line, it is the result of a mastery of speed, accuracy and strength. When replacing the watery ink with oil paint the effect is more bold and dramatic . The black lines are created by the use of black, shiny paint, which can only be subtly manipulated to draw, define and confuse the images, never to totally control and predict.

The result is a play of lines, colour and imagery.
