Platform China presents the Northern Salon at the Armory Show’s China Focus. The project features artists whose roots all trace back to the same region: Northeastern China, better known as 'Dongbei'. The project does not seek to assess regional trends across the country, but in fact to present artistic discoveries, which arose in a very peculiar and remote area.
Presented in the format of a ‘salon’, a physical and spiritual space where art is discussed, it features works by six artists: Wang Yin, Zhao Gang, Qin Qi, Ma Ke, Song Yuanyuan and Zhang Yexing. These artists, all born in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, still explore the possibilities of the painting language as a contemporary art form, despite a growing trend to turn to alternative materials, media and art forms. Even within the same country, different regions and eras display a rich variety of possibilities.
The “Northern Salon” booth is split into a main exhibition space and a smaller section dedicated to rotating mini-exhibitions featuring one artist per day. Through these presentations Platform China presents an insight into leading contemporary Chinese artists from this region.
