Edouard Malingue Gallery at Art Stage Singapore 2014
by Edouard Malingue Gallery
Location: Booth B13 & China Platform, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore
Artist(s): GROUP SHOW
Date: 15 Jan - 19 Jan 2014

Edouard Malingue Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in Art Stage Singapore 2014. As well as presenting an array of works at the booth, the gallery has been selected to present Yuan Yuan at the China Platform curated by Huang Du. Following from the gallery’s dedication to showing art with a multicultural perspective, the booth will feature work by established contemporary artists such as Callum Innes (b. 1962, Scotland), Laurent Grasso (b. 1971, France), Janaina Tschäpe (b. 1973, Brazil/Germany) and Los Carpinteros (est. 1991, Cuba), as well as works by selected mid-career and emerging artists such as João Vasco Paiva (b. 1979, Portugal/Hong Kong), Fabien Merélle (b. 1981, France), Yuan Yuan (b. 1973, China) and Nuri Kuzucan (b. 1971, Turkey). Furthermore, the gallery will present a note-worthy work by Chu-Teh Chun (b. 1920, China/France).

Since its inception, Edouard Malingue Gallery has established itself as an important platform for displaying artists within a pluralistic programme that places an emphasis on curation. On display will be several canvas as well as paper works by the infamous Callum Innes, who explores through colour and density the occupation of line, form and space. These will be placed alongside two important works by the conceptual artist Laurent Grasso, who creates multi-media pieces that blur our conceptions of past, present and future. Furthermore, the gallery will exhibit several works by the witty yet socially conscious duo Los Carpinteros, including the sculpture Guïro (2013), which was built in monumental form to grand acclaim at Art Basel Miami Beach 2012. In addition, the gallery will introduce to Singapore the work of Janaina Tschäpe, whose wonderful canvas and paper works depict an abundance of biomorphic shapes that collectively create ethereal landscapes, brimming with sensuality and luscious natural beauty. Finally, the gallery is thrilled to present ‘Corail’ by Chu Teh-Chun (1989), one of the foremost masters of Post-War art.

Further highlights at the booth include new works by Hangzhou-based artist Yuan Yuan, who following from his previous practice depicts with incredible detail and rigorous skill the many elements of interior spaces that have been subject to passages of time and the usage of man. Complementing these works will be a painting by Nuri Kuzucan, which through its technique of layering multiple coats of paint represents the dense contemporary metropolis and its global lexicon. Also attune to the city and it’s idiosyncrasies, João Vasco Paiva presents work that reduces those urban elements that we do not consider twice to a state of aesthetic geometric abstraction. Tending away from the thematic of architecture, the gallery will also be displaying a sculpture by Fabien Merélle, which was previously exhibited as part of his recent solo exhibition at Le Musée de La Rochelle, France.

In addition to the works at the booth, Edouard Malingue Gallery has been selected to participate in the China Platform, curated by Huang Du. On display will be Yuan Yuan’s new work A Little Bit Lonely I, which presents the artist’s burgeoning interest in the Renaissance and his ability, through including multiple planes of perspective, to suggest space beyond that which is strictly shown. This interior depicts an entranceway to a multi-story building. This area does not seem inhabited, but one can imagine it having served a designated purpose. Since abandoned, it has suffered the tests of time and is alone in speaking for what it once was. Yuan Yuan thus presents an invitation for our minds to travel into the past and imagine for ourselves the origins of this illusory space. Simultaneously, Yuan introduces his interest in a cultural movement, which although of the past and originating in Italy, has developed into a general style that manifests itself worldwide.
