The name Meggs comes from a classic Australian comic book character who shares the artist's physical trait of red hair and also a penchant for mischief. He’s kind of like an Aussie Dennis the menace.

Meggs is trying to achieve a balance between form and abstraction, he described his work as abstract expressionist pop-art. Street/grafitti influenced techniques, graphic design and layered abstraction, with drips!

Deeply influenced by comic books, Phantom, Batman and Spiderman comics are his childhood companion. Comics has definitely made a big influence on my love for graphic arts and appreciation for illustration and pop-art culture.

Here in Hong Kong for the first time, Meggs does not know a lot about Hong Kong, except that’s its an industrious city, with lots happening and a mixed history of cultural influences. He is really looking forward to seeing it in person and exploring the streets.

The idea about the King for a Day exhibition is a combined response to stories like the ‘Sword of Damocles’ and ‘King for a day, Fool for a lifetime’. Following on from his previous works its a further exploration of  dualities and opposites that uses pop-culture references and symbolism to represent status, power, death and innocence in a kind of abstract and mashed up way. Basically how his mind works most of the time. he has also been listening to more metal (music) of late, he considers this body of works are probably little darker then before, but still with a playful touch.
