Feng Fangyu, is a part of a new generation of contemporary Chinese photographers. Feng Fangyu most recent series, Confused will be presented  in Paris Photo. In this series, he returns to the traces of this ancient imperial residence, one of the most sacred places in the Chinese tradition, The Old Summer Palace (Yuan Mingyuan). The Palace and its magnificent grounds, which were destroyed in 1860 by the British and French armies during the Second Opium War, are a strong symbol of foreign aggression.

In this series of photographs, Feng Fangyu does not limit the understanding of a place full of sense; he shows the animals from the ancient fountain of zodiac. Twelve heads of animal of this mythic fountain disappeared; the remaining are still fascinating, for example the rat and the rabbit presented in Pierre Bergé-YSL Auction in 2008.

In the Confused series, the dog, the monkey, the rat, the goat and the rabbit are dressed in sage clothing and haunting the Yuan Mingyuan. Through crossing the borders between real and fantasy, Feng Fangyu shows that ancient China still bears the memory of an extravagant palace. A daring and forward homage to memory and patriotism, Confused seems to be an enchanted dream version of the real world.

Alongside Paris Photo, Magda Danysz in her Paris gallery exhibits Magic China, which brings together other artists of this new generation of Chinese photographers: Qiu Minye, Wang Tong, Chen Xiaowei and Xu Zhe. Here, we discover the transformation of China through these dynamic artists and their exquisite work. China is now the second largest economy. It is the most populated country in the world; its development is exceedingly fast.

Witnessing this dynamic and modern China today, the younger generation of Chinese photographers explore the contrasts between tradition and modernity in their country. Memory, patriotism, the influence of globalization and the exploration of marginality are emerging issues that reappear in their work.
