Born 1983 in Hangzhou, where he currently lives and works. Zhou is a graduate of the prestigious oil painting department of China Academy of Art. His humorous yet insightful portrayals of contemporary societies symbolise human desires in the nature of the wild life survival instincts, revealing a modern world that has gone wayward.
Drawing his initial concepts and subjects from materials found in magazines and newspapers, Zhou frequently utilises traditional Chinese mystical figures, stories, idioms and phrases, in the context of China’s overtly materialised and competitive society after 80’s economics reform, to colour and project the unfolding of this ironically poignant and bizarre phenomena.
Zhou’s amusing yet critical metaphor is evidently pronounced with the depiction a pig eating a tiger in the painting, Eat It!, a literal interpretation/visual translation of an old Chinese idiom that reads: ‘One’s pretending to be a pig in order to eat a tiger’, which in spirit mirrors the meaning of ‘Beware of a wolf in sheep’s clothing’. His play on words and visual elements serves as a timely criticism of our winner-takes-all culture.
