The Cat Street Gallery is proud to present Revolve, an exhibition featuring the works of celebrated British duo Rob and Nick Carter. The married couple have been working in London as artistic collaborators for over twelve years and this will be the Carter’s first solo show in Asia. Their artwork explores a central preoccupation with the tenets of light, colour and form.
In recent works the artists abandon traditional paint and canvas and instead employ light sensitive paper. The Carters are essentially pioneering an approach where they paint with light, capturing form outside of the normal parameters of photography. In complete darkness the image is incrementally built through the gradual application of ‘painted light’. In these works the Carters deftly navigate the limits of photography and celebrate the intrinsic beauty of colour and form. There is a distinct freedom granted by moving away from the technical confines of the medium: there is no shutter, negative or lens and therefore each piece is unique and unrepeatable.
Their work is characterized by the use of positively vibrant, high gloss colours, resulting in a potent visual energy. The series Spectrum Circles displays an unbridled enjoyment in pure abstract colour. The circles and spirals drawn with light have been painstakingly captured on light sensitive paper by the artists, yet their presence is so forceful and each line so intent, that the works display an effortless grace.
The artists have exhibited internationally including solo shows in New York, Los Angeles, Zurich, Geneva, Milan and at the prestigious Fine Art Society in London. Their work has been included in major museum shows and in 2007 they were shortlisted for the Sovereign Art Prize. The Carters are represented in a host of corporate collections and high profile private collections. Nick Carter completed her BA in Fine Art and Art History at Goldsmiths College, University of London and has been the curator of the Groucho Club for twenty years.
