More Paintings From No Man's Land
by The Cat Street Gallery
Location: The Cat Street Gallery
Artist(s): Guy MAESTRI
Date: 20 Sep - 13 Oct 2012

The Cat Street Gallery is pleased to announce Archibald Prize winner Guy Maestri’s third stunning solo show with the gallery. ‘More Paintings From No Man’s Land’ is a new series of oil on linen works depicting landscape scenes of Australia’s diverse terrain.

Maestri is well known for his ability to work in more than one style and across many mediums, often dramatically altering the appearance of his work from one show to the next. In more recent works and for this upcoming show, Maestri has returned to his rural homeland for inspiration. The artist depicts mountain, forest, and field with a vigorous and expressive approach creating deeply atmospheric pieces which are intrinsically connected to the

places they are inspired by:

This show is a travel log. I’ve spent a lot of time painting out doors for this show, in very diverse areas of Australia and this body of work spans from literal to subliminal renderings of these places, as I attempt to make sense of the act and the tradition of landscape painting” comments Maestri.

Born in New South Wales, Maestri is based in Sydney and has shown widely throughout Australia with many successful solo shows. Aside from the 2009 Archibald Prize win for his stirring portrait of Indigenous singer, Geoffrey Gurrumul, he was a finalist for the Dobell Drawing Prize in both 2007 and 2008.
