Too Good to Be True
by The Cat Street Gallery
Location: The Cat Street Gallery
Artist(s): Rachel HOVNANIAN
Date: 21 Mar - 15 Apr 2012

The Cat Street Gallery is delighted to announce the first solo show in Asia by American artist Rachel Hovnanian. Her latest exhibition, entitled Too Good to Be True, presents a kind of "pilgrim's progress" in which Hovnanian's iconic Beauty Queen Totem makes her way in the world, moving from one stage of beauty-based thralldom to another. As both a pop-culture embodiment of idea beauty and a prize for achieving it, we see the Beauty Queen disciplining herself to endure the privations of beauty like an athlete in training; on the career track, facing a different kind of competition than on the runway; and at home, ambushed by the realities of marriage and domesticity.

Rachel Hovnanian has a BFA from the University of Texas and worked post-grad at the Paarsons School of Design. Rachel has had extensive exhibitions in both America and Europe. She now lives and works in New York.
