A large scale sculptural installation will finally be unveiled at Today Art Museum.Shi Jinsong’s new work Penetrate (2011) is one of the artists solo shows hosted by Today Art Museum. This exhibition, curated by art critic Karen Smith has been produced in collaboration with Platform China.Mercedes-Benz supports the exhibition and is a sponsor of the show.
The work, a dark channel, is made of charcoal, wood, mental and other materials. This black tunnel acts as a shelter, a space for visitors to enter and represents a black hole without boundaries. The curator Karen Smith believes: the darkness slows us down. Before we see the mass that penetrates the space, we sense its presence in the air, both through our nostrils and that intangible sixth sense that usually signals potential danger. Whilst Penetrate does not represent any physical danger, in referencing the past —one meaning of the Chinese title “guo qu/过去”—it alludes to an indeterminable future, and the passage of time that necessarily links our journey between the two.
This exhibition will continue to May 11th, 2011. In addition, Shi Jinsong and the curator Karen Smith will give a talk at 2pm, April.24th, 2nd floor exhibition hall of building No.1,Today Art Museum.
