Tokyo Gallery+BTAP is very pleased to present "MONO-HA: Works on Paper", on view at Tokyo from March 7th. Tokyo Gallery + BTAP held Nobuo Sekine’s acclaimed solo show in 1969 and has continued to organize exhibitions on artists affiliated to the Mono-ha movement for more than four decades. While these artists are mainly recognized for their large-scale installations and three-dimensional works, this exhibition focuses on their intimate scaled practices on the paper medium. Exhibiting works are by Koji Enokura, Kenji Enomaki, Susumu Koshimizu, Lee Ufan, Nobuo Sekine, Kishio Suga, Katsuhiko Narita and Katsuro Yoshida.
As exemplified in Koji Enokura’s Drawing for Figure B-No.61, the artist frequently drew detailed esquisses as preparatory works for his large-size two-dimensional paintings. In contrast, Kishio Suga’s series of experimental drawings and collages of the mid-1970s are autonomous works, which combines variety of materials and methodologies in order to examine the spatial and material possibilities of paper. This exhibition intends to re-investigate each artist’s unique approaches and practices, and to reconsider their distinctiveness through the paper medium.
