Non-growing Garden
by CyArt Gallery
Location: CyArt Gallery
Artist(s): Hyun Joo KIM
Date: 6 Mar - 18 Mar 2013

Hyun Joo Kim, who has asked a question for identity in the chaotic modern society, chose the new theme for this exhibition, 'non-growing garden'.
She has been through an ethnical and cultural gap between Korea and Germany, experiences between two families after marriage, or economical and social positions, which gave her the fundamental worries about her identity. For this problem, she doesn't divide any boundary among mediums, print, photograph, video, performance and installation. Especially for this exhibition, as combining painting and installation, her changed context method of images shows another way of beauty unlike video or photograph.
Three paintings on a circle canvas stimulate our imagination. There are 3 kids hiding their eyes. The characteristics of those paintings are children's faces and hidden eyes. It is a portrait of modern people, who try to hide their true colors. And eyes are the one and only route to identify the image, so that hidden eyes reveal ironical situation, and struggle to not to be caged in the image world.
Non-growing plants on terracotta are the artist herself or modern people in a confusing state. Even though she uses various methods of painting, an objet, and installation, she strongly shows conceptual meaning of painting.
