After two sell out exhibitions, Lara Merrett will hold her eagerly awaited third solo exhibition with Karen Woodbury Gallery, Melbourne in April. This satellite exhibition will be held at Block Projects, Melbourne. ‘invaders’ will consist of a suite of major paintings in varying scale, including a signature two paneled diptych.
Lara’s organic abstract paintings will include a range of geometric elements in this new body of work. Invading hard edge shapes and forms derived from objects collected by the artist in her studio are integrated and contrasted against her free-floating relaxed compositions that spill across the painting surface to create a three-dimensional feel. These surfaces present a combination of gloss and matt finishes and are offset by areas of curious and intricate detailing.
Merrett’s layered painting process and technique breaks down original source imagery such as text to present an engulfing visual experience. Her adventurous and stunning choice of palette in these new works range from metallic pinks, fluorescent yellows, earthy red ochres and aquamarine blues and greens.
Lara Merrett studied painting at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, Spain in 1993 and completed a Master of Arts (Painting) at the College of Fine Arts, University of NSW in 1997. Merrett’s work has been selected for various group exhibitions that include: Turbulent Terrain, Latrobe Regional Gallery, Melbourne (and touring) (2009/10); Newtown Diaries, Delmar Gallery, Sydney (2009); An Ever Expanding Universe, Perth Insitute of Contemporary Arts, Perth (2008); DeĢcor, Glen Eira City Council Gallery, Melbourne (2008); ABN Amro Emerging Artist Award, Melbourne & Sydney; The Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship, Artspace, Sydney (1999 & 2002) and New Acquisitions, Sir Herman Black Gallery, Sydney University, Sydney (2000).
