Luke George exhibition
Artist(s): Luke GEORGE
Date: 20 Feb - 3 Mar 2012

"I am interested in inhabiting strange spaces in performance that are simultaneously mysterious/visceral/non-rational -versus- explicit/cognitive/conceptual. I am exploring this through developing a practice of improvisation and using vocabularies that originate from outside of dance, but inscribing them in dance. During my time at West Space I will be working on what it is to access the supernatural and the scientific as modalities to apply to the performative body and the performer/audience situation, as a way to explore what is perceiving, knowing and believing. This stage of development and experimentation is part of a solo project I am developing and will premiere in March 2013."

Luke George will inhabit the Back Space at West Space for one week developing this new work. He is a contemporary dancer, choreographer, teacher and curator. His work has taken him through Australia, North America, Europe and Asia. He is best known for his performing work with Phillip Adams BalletLab, Jo Lloyd and Chunky Move. For Luke’s own choreographies, highlights include HOME, LIFESIZE and NOW NOW NOW. Luke has received several awards, commissions, residencies and fellowships and was artistic director of Tasmanian youth dance company Stompin, 2002-2008. He currently co-facilitates First Run at Lucy Guerin Inc and has been invited to present his work in Norway and the Netherlands in 2012. www.lukegeorge.net
