Artist(s): Hsiao CHIN
Date: 9 Oct 2010 - 13 Mar 2011
The retrospective exhibition of Hsiao Chin, the winner of the 2002 National Fine Art Prize, is organized by the KMFA as one of the serial exhibitions of the “Homage to the Master.” Born in Shanghai, Hsiao grew up in Taiwan, yet has lived in Italy for over half a century. In the 1950’s, he studied painting under the apprenticeship of Li Chun-shen, and was a member of the Ton-Fan Art Group. During his time with the group, he explored the theme of abstract painting, and led the avant-garde wave of Taiwanese modern art. It has been 55 years since he received the grant from the Spanish government and travelled to Europe. Amidst the ever-changing waves of Western modern art, Hsiao has never lost sight of his inner self. His artworks contain both the distinctive style of modern art, as well as the profound philosophical thinking of the East. There no longer appears the need to determine whether Hsiao Chin’s paintings are Chinese or global in style, because his creations have long exceeded the initial boundaries.
