Funeral for Bioengineering to Not to Die
Artist(s): Shusaku ARAKAWA
Date: 17 Apr - 27 Jun 2010

Before moving to New York in December 1961, Arakawa Shusaku produced a large number of three-dimensional works in the shape of coffins. Inside the wooden boxes were lumps of oddly shaped cement placed on top of a bundle of fabric-wrapped wood chips. Here was the death that Arakawa fixed his gaze on in an attempt to reverse our ultimate destiny. In 2007, a project to restore three large-scale works of this type, which had been missing until that point, was completed. In this exhibition, these works will be shown for the first time in Osaka alongside some 20 other early Arakawa works, dating from between 1958 and just prior to the artist's move to the U.S., on loan from a variety of museums from around the country.
