This introductory seminar series comprises six sessions giving an overview of the importance of conservation and collection care and related theoretical issues, an outline of conservation at the University of the Arts London, materials used in the making of paintings, the ways in which paintings can deteriorate and the ways in which conservators and conservation scientists analyse paintings.
Presentations 1, 2 and 3 focus on the nature and value of conservation, its importance to people now and in the future and some of the challenges it faces in contemporary society world-wide. They consider the importance to the collector of being well-informed about the material they collect and about how to ensure its preservation. Conservation education at the University of the Ails London is also discussed and a description given of what it has to otter to those concerned with the preservation and conservation of the many and varied things that people value.
Presentations 4, 5 and 6 consider what materials have been used by artists, how they can change over time and how they can be analyzed. The classes will be illustrated with powerpoint presentations and handouts with guide to relevant literature and internet resources. The final class will include a small number of simple practical demonstrations.
