“A Traveler’s Diary” will be Chang Fee Ming’s first solo exhibition in London (22nd June-5th July 2014) It is a continuation of his traveling exhibition which first kicked off at the Bamboo Gallery, in Ubud, Bali last year. The collection will showcase mainly pieces from the private collection of Daniel Komala (CEO of Larasati Auctioneers and Chairman of One East Asia) and a few most recent works by the artist. The touring exhibitions are held to celebrate two decades of friendship between the artist and the collector, who started buying Chang’s works even though he had little to spend on art, and had to pay in instalments in his early days as a collector.
A self-taught painter, Chang was born in the coastal state of Terengganu. Over his 30-year career, he has carved out a niche painting the peoples of Malaysia and Southeast Asia, capturing the colours, textures and diversity of life in this region in vivid and detailed works. Chang Fee Ming's soul belongs to Southeast Asia. His passionate commitment to Asia's vast and diverse continent, radiating out for thousands of miles beyond his native Malaysia, has resulted in a large body of work that focuses upon the lives of the ordinary people of Asia, Southeast Asia in particular, recording their daily activities and traditional cultures through figuration and landscape.
"A Traveler's Diary” will take the viewers to a series of epic journeys, exploring Southeast Asia and beyond. Fee Ming is recording old ways of life for millions in Asia before they disappear for good. His outlook is protective and affectionate. He seeks to preserve the rhythm and customs of communal life, and to celebrate it.
