Known as the founder of mobile, a type of the kinetic sculpture, Alexander Calder (1898-1976) is loved by the public and one of the important sculptors in a history of contemporary sculpture. After studying engineering, he became the sculptor and showed artistic genius. During staying in Paris in early 1930s, he interchanged with leading artists in Paris, Mondrian, Miro, Ducham and Arp, and was influenced by the latest art of the time, such as abstract art and surrealism.
His representative works, mobile and stabile, are the most innovative sculpture in 20th century created by artistic talent, avant-garde art and his engineering acknowledge.
The exhibition is the most significant retrospective in Korea jointly planned by Leeum and New York Calder Foundation. 118 art works cover his representative works throughout his life, and not only mobile and stabile, wire sculpture, a root of his art, and a wild range of art works are also included. For the exhibition, works in 1930s, the most groundbreaking period showing mobile and stabile affected by works in 1920s and abstract art, at Black Box and in Ground Gallery, various works in 1940s and 1950s, a stage of change and maturity and the big monumental sculpture projects in his latter years will be on display.
The exhibition is to look back art historical meaning and importance his sculpture has as dealing with his whole art world and to broaden our understanding of Calder's art, which was concentrated in mobile and stabile.
