'New Generation' focuses on young Korean photographers exploring fresh dialogues with the more established history of Korean photography and its pioneers, rather than following the previously strong influence of the West.
The artists have collaborated on a group project of homage to Korean photographers from 1920s to 1950s and, in the exhibition, they will present a selection of this new collaborative work alongside their own personal work experimenting with the medium of photography.
Presented concurrently with an exhibition at the prestigious Museum of Photography in Seoul, the show in Aarhus introduces new work by eight young Korean artists rarely if ever seen before. These eight upcoming artists – Bora Sung, Chankyu Kim, Hyungsik Kim, Bareun, Jihyun Jung, Taejoong Kim, Youngdon Jung and Youngjin Yoo – belong to the newest generation of contemporary photographers in Korea and CAU photography.
'CAU photography' is the name of a loose grouping of young photography artists who have graduated from or who are studying fine art photography at Chung-Ang University. In 1964, Chung-Ang University established the first school of photography in Korea and graduates from the school have gone on to take leading roles in the Korean contemporary art scene.
