Is it noise?
Artist(s): GROUP SHOW
Date: 13 May - 22 Jun 2014

The innovative exhibition aims to present visitors with an opportunity to look toward the future and to diagnose the present state of sound art through the work of nineteen musicians who have been active in various genres such as noise, impromptu music, and electronic music by using sound as a medium since the mid-1990s. Sound art has developed under the direct and indirect influence in contemporary art, ranging from , a herald of futurism, to John Cage. This exhibition sheds light on artworks by several Korean musicians who have emerged since the 1990s in the context of the technology of mass media and subculture by substituting 'visual space' with 'audible space.'

At the exhibition , which may be characterized as a novel experiment in the field of listening mechanisms, the harmonious sounds made by the participating musicians create 'a garden of noises' as they simultaneously mix with each other. Visitors to the exhibition can engage in individual contact with a sound or performance video of the musicians through headphones. To further deepen and enrich this experience, visitors can use a computer to produce DIY leaflets by personally compiling videos, sounds, and text materials of the participating musicians. In short, they can experience the exhibition in a totally new and exciting way through active rather than passive modes of participation.

The exhibition has expanded the spectrum of participating artists from the generation of artists, such as Kwon Byungjun, Moim Byeol, Ryul Hankil, Jin Sangtae, Choi Joonyong, Transistor Head, and Hong Chulki, all of whom emerged in the late 1990s and staged impromptu performances with noises produced from specific machines or media, rather than with harmonious sounds or chords, to the present generation of artists, including Graye, Damirat, Rumhan, Mimyo, Miiin, Sklaventanz, Sima Kim, Odaeri, Se Chung, Choi Taehyun, Haihm, and The Hitchhiker, who experiment within a cooperative system based on electronic music. This exhibition explores the phenomenon of sound art in the wider context of subculture and media, rather than limiting itself to similar genres and modes of expression.

This exhibition consists of performance videos and music by musicians who are leading the contemporary wave of sound art as well as actively engaging in artistic activities on the international stage. It strives to narrow the gap between museum, visitors, and musicians by directly introducing windows of communication with visitors, such as home pages or Soundclouds, where the artists usually present their artworks. In particular, a surprise collaborative album and live performances by Odaeri and pope x pope will be presented at the exhibition. Furthermore, four special sessions for communication with the artists and workshops will be offered to enhance visitors's understanding of contemporary art and sound art in which the boundary between genres is disappearing, and to promote communication between the participating musicians and visitors.

*The title of this exhibition, , derives from the title of a cynical, skeptical note posted on the message board of the ‘Relay’ website in 2007 by participating artist Hong Chulki.
