Sungkok Art Museum is pleased to present 'Painted World' by Sung Yun Kim. This is one of representing exhibition programs of the museum to support contemporary artists and re-invite the artists who got a good review at the exhibition 'Local review 2013: Busan' in 2013.
Sung Yun Kim has explored various transformation possibility of painting technique through painting, photography, video, objet and installation for 30 years. Especially, understanding of hi-tech video, culture and equipment during studying in the United States in early 1990s affected on the artist and art in Busan. Video works by artists in Busan in 1990s were closely connected to his practice as the artist and avant-garde curation. In addition, his alternative community activity, distributing such tendency to young local curators contributed to forming art of Busan today.
His artistic interests at the moment were one-sided deconstruction of discourse in terms of suppliers by mass media and correlation of a gap in reality each person experiences as a passive consumer. These questions were revealed in his solo and group exhibitions including the first solo show in New York in 2012 with video installation for uncertainty of identity.
Since 2010, Kim more emphasizes ambiguous and uncertain feeling as photograph and video. Including recent works, he produce unclear situations as making full use of photography and image technique. His solo exhibition in 2012, 'An Island,' showed video works only based on 'island,' which also screened at the recent group exhibition 'Local review 2013: Busan.' To him, the island reflects on his portrait. Island is portrait of everyone whether it is big or small.
