Chang-Sup Chung Retrospective
Artist(s): Sup Chung CHANG
Date: 3 Aug - 17 Oct 2010

The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea presents you the Chang-Sup Chung Retrospective, which has been organized to look back on the works of Chang-Sup Chung, an epoch-making artist in the history of Korean contemporary art. This is the first of his retrospective in about sixty years since he made his debut at the 2nd National Art Exhibition in 1953.

Chang-Sup Chung, member of the first post-liberation generation of Korean artists trained in Korea, developed his career alongside the wheels of Korea's contemporary art history. His life as an artist has been a journey in search of an independent art world. During such journey, he has attempted a wide range of experiments, from Informel to monochrome paintings to paper mulberry, resulting in such works as Tak and Meditation which embody Korea's unique and traditional sentiments.

Chung has consistently pursued the unity of such disparate notions as tradition and present, East and West, and mind and matter. With a strong determination to achieve the 'unity between matter and the self', he has contributed to the birth of Korean Abstract Paintings which radiate our nation's distinct beauty. He has devoted his entire life to making art in the most Korean way possible and finding the fundamental potential of Korean art that can help it earn international recognition. Through Chang-Sup Chung's works, characterized by his struggles to find the identity of Korean art, you can appreciate the agony and depth of an artist, as well as the development of the history of post-war contemporary art.
