Is art more than a thing just to enjoy? If there isn’t an environment where artworks are needed and artists can make a livelihood selling their artworks, then they will undoubtedly move away from Hokkaido. The art market is necessary in order to make art an important part of culture in Sapporo (Hokkaido).
The population of Sapporo is approximately 1.9 million, 5.5 million in Hokkaido. But currently there is virtually no contemporary art market in Sapporo. For the development of this potential market, we have organized an art fair in order to provide an opportunity for fine artworks by 20 galleries with an international perspective to be exhibited and sold at the rooms of the Cross Hotel Sapporo.
As a first step to make art culture an essential part of the city, we hope this project will lead to an increase in interest in the contemporary art in Sapporo, enhance the atmosphere of the Sapporo International Art Festival 2014.
