Koizumi Meiro
Date: 25 Jul - 18 Nov 2009

Koizumi Meiro (born 1976) is an up and coming young artist, who works predominantly with the medium of video. His early works, most of which were documentary videos of his own performances, were reminiscent of 1970s performance art. Koizumi's more recent works, however, tend to capture dialogues between the artist and the characters or scenes where the artist gives directions to the actors telling stories. They cover such topics as memories of childhood shared with thier mothers and trauma resulting from the breakup of relationships.

Sometimes comical and at other times violent, the stories depict emotions such as passion, rapture and anger while at the same time seeking to explore the fundaments of psychological states underlying those emotions. You could call these unique creations “dramas of humor and incongruity.” Koizumi, who in 2001 won the first prize at the Institute of Contemporary Arts' “Beck's Futures 2, Student Film and Video Award” while still a student in London, received critical acclaim from an early stage in his career. Since then he has been included in many exhibitions held around the world. In this first solo museum exhibition of Koizumi's, two works will be showcased, one of which is made especially for this exhibition. Don't miss this opportunity to experience the creative talents of this internationally active artist in his home country.
