Artist(s): Seiichi SHIRAI
Date: 8 Jan - 27 Mar 2011
Even during his lifetime architect Seiichi Shirai (1905-1983) was held in near mythical status as a philosopher and a poet. Distancing himself from modern architecture, he created a series of highly individual architectural works, characterized by shapes and light with a sense of symbolism and narrative, ranging from his earliest wooden creations to his implicit ‘Atomic Bomb Catastrophe Temple’ and his famous design of the Shinwa Bank Head Office. This exhibition will be the first to represent the sheer constellations of his works – from architecture to calligraphy, book designs, and essays – and to construct his own world within the walls of a museum.
