Celebration by Marc Chagall
Artist(s): Marc CHAGALL
Date: 26 Feb - 29 May 2011

Marc Chagall (1887-1985) is an ambassador bringing love and inspiration; few painters in the annals of art history have immersed themselves so wholly as Chagall in praising the beauty of love.

Throughout his life, Chagall used his paintings, dreamscapes, and poems to sincerely and candidly present his interpretation of love.

Chagall once said, "For those who love, everything will always be clear-and for those who do not love -what can we say?"(qtd. in Franz Meyer, 1963, p498).
To Chagall, flowers were life in its joyous state. He once said, "I was poor, and near me, there were no flowers. The first one, Bella had brought it to me"(qtd. in Andre Verdet. Chagall mediterranneen, Paris, 1983, p58).

Chagall's art is filled with love, from his love for his one true love Bella Rosenfeld to his love for his hometown of Vitebsk; lovers embracing, bouquet and birds, roosters, sheep, horses, mules, violinist on the roof, circus troupe-all were visions of love and nostalgia, the classic symbols of a Chagall, expressing again and again his heartfelt sentiments.

Presented at the Celebration by Marc Chagall exhibition are over one hundred pieces gathered from museums and corporate collections across Japan, as well as pieces from the family collections in France and Switzerland-a truly rare event. "L'anniversaire," Chagall's magnum opus, forms the centerpiece of the exhibition, which fully showcases Chagall's art and life; his passionate love of lofe and romantic colors bring out the love and beauty that Chagall believed in and pursued all his life , and the world is warmed and enriched because of them.
