Xu Bing Aerial Phoenix Project
Artist(s): XU Bing
Date: 28 Mar - 16 Apr 2010

An unusual art event will take place in the art plaza on March 27th at 4pm. Two colossal bird sculpture named “Phoenix” will be installed on site and suspended 15 meter above ground. Each measured 12 tones, 8 meters in width, 28 meters and 27 meters in length respectively, these two mystic creatures will spread their wings with CBD Central Business District as their backdrop. With the architectural monument CCTV tower and Beijing’s tallest building China World Trade Center Tower 3 in the background, these symbols of fortune and power create an ironic yet harmonized composition that constitutes a distinctive visual style.

Regarded as one of the most innovative artists of our time, “Phoenix” is the most distinguished work after Xu Bing returned to China from living abroad. Drawing from his new experience in China, he spent two years of tireless work on this piece. Using primarily waste materials from the numerous construction sites in Beijing, he made use of machinery, tools, building materials and even workers’ articles of daily use. Accompanied the installation, there will be an exhibition inside the museum on the documentation of the two-year creative process in reportage and comic book format. Moreover, a seminar will be held with speakers from the fields of architecture, art, culture and real estate development.
