Sichuan artist Liao Zhenwu started work on MONUMENT the day after the earthquake struck his home province in May 2008. Now, as the two-year anniversary of the tragedy approaches, this powerful body of work is unveiled for the first time.
Encompassing a variety of media, including two giant paintings measuring 5 x 12 meters, MONUMENT is a spectacular dialogue on the fragility of life and the power of nature, and a memorable tribute to the victims of the tragedy.
The first venue in the international museum tour is the Today Art Museum, Beijing, running from April 11 - 17 th. The show will subsequently travel to museums in Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Chengdu before heading over to the United States.
A companion exhibition of Liao Zhenwu's earthquake work will be held through the duration of the tour at the Museum of China Cultural Arts in Art Base 1, Beijing. As well as paintings, sketches, and sculptures, the show includes a poignant series of photographs taken by the artist on his visits to the scene of the catastrophe.
