The Phenomenology of Life: Chapters in a Course of Study
Artist(s): HUANG Zhiyang
Date: 29 Mar - 18 Apr 2014

This exhibition records Huang Zhiyang’s artistic creation of the past eight years since he moved to Beijing in 2006 and demonstrate his preoccupation with the life in the capital. In particular, Possessing Numerous Peaks-Dragon, an installation artwork, consists of 19 pieces of white marble carving. Based on towers and city walls in the neighborhood of Wangjing Tower, on the Great Wall of the Ming dynasty, and combining the dragon totem of the Qin and Han dynasties, it represents an adorable image of rolling mountains guarding Beijing. Zoon-Beijing Bio: Spring consists of nine linked screens rendered in dense black ink on silk. With the artist’s unique brushwork, this work depicts the scene of everything coming to life in the early spring, echoing the image of Beijing as a large energy filed for diverse beings. There are more works worth of our attention. For example, Zoon-Dreamscape records rapid changes in space and an endless drama of life in modern cities. The sculpture Auspicious Beast represents a new image deriving from an auspicious animal. I am a cute germ shows microorganisms viewed under a high-powered microscope in 2000. It implies that human beings are rapidly and continuously decomposing the earth we live in as microorganisms do. It is hoped that these works of diversified forms and rich artistic languages can enable the viewers to get a glimpse of the artist’s mind and thought.
