Wang Hanshan(1924 — 2000)was born in Shuangfeng County of Hunan Province. In 1943, he was admitted to Nanjing Art Institute. In 1946, he studied in Hangzhou National Art College, apprenticed to Gao Xishun, Pan Tianshou, etc. successively. His free-style flower-and-bird paintings lay stress on the scene of country life, replete with earthy fragrance and forming a concise and simple painting style. Represented by freehand flower-and-bird paintings, his works contain flowers, birds, worms, fish and articles for daily use in the countryside. Rich and rough paintings are filled with countrified and individual feelings, displaying the new trend of individuation and secularization of traditional free-style flower-and-bird paintings. Giving expression to the painter’s achievement in artistic thinking and practice of free-style flower-and-bird paintings, these works will bring new aesthetic experience for appreciators with a strong local flavor.
