Untitled by Hong Kong Artist Leung Chi-wo @ HKAC
Artist(s): LEUNG Chi Wo
Date: 21 Jun - 14 Jul 2012

[Hong Kong Arts Centre] (HKAC) and  [Public Art Hong Kong](PAHK) co-present another thought-provoking piece of public art to the Hong Kong public – Untitled by Hong Kong artist Leung Chi-wo. Untitled comprises of three artworks, they are Names to Recall Memory but Not Exactly, Drawing from Memory but Not Exactly and Words about Memories but Not Exactly. Untitled is on display from now until late July, 2012 at the HKAC Main Entrance & G/F Lobby.

Leung Chi-wo graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He co-founded one of the most important art spaces in Hong Kong, Para/Site Art Space, in 1996. In 2001, Leung’s site-specific project was exhibited at the first Hong Kong pavilion of the Venice Biennale. Leung is one of the most important Hong Kong contemporary artists.

For Untitled, Leung started his research 6 months ago with a group of Hong Kong Art School students and alumni for names of Hong Kong artists whom the Hong Kong audience is unfamiliar with. The research team randomly browsed through exhibition catalogues and invitation cards at the HKAC, in libraries and art archives. They drafted a list with hundreds of names, and trimmed down the list with internet search, keeping those names that were rarely heard of in the last decade. Leung brought the list to several senior artists and curators for their memories of the listed names. The final list became the source for the three new works of this project.

Leung Chi-wo explains, “It is an exploration of names that had once appeared in my artistic journey. Those unheard of names, acquaintances, and friends are now far off from my life. What is the percentage of names that remain remembered among all those we have come across? It is such a nice excuse to revisit a list of forgotten people in the name of art. He is there and I would like to make a drawing of him.”

Untitled has recorded memories of Hong Kong visual art that are unknown to most, and is a chance for the audience to get to know the experience of the quietly persevering Hong Kong art contributors and workers.

Artist: Leung Chi-wo Research team: Students and alumni of the Hong Kong Art School (Au Ching, Au Ho Lam, Christy Chow, So Wing Hon, Alex Tang, Yu Chun Yip) Artworks materials: (Names to recall memory but not exactly/ Drawing from memory but not exactly) inkjet print on vinyl sticker; (Words about memories but not exactly) seven-channel video installation
