Spring is the season of hope, the time of new beginnings. The third month of the ancient calendar is the time when warmth returns to the land, and once withered foliage blooms with new colour. The ancients said, “Spring begins in the third month and flowers begin to bloom”, a perfect description of the verdant scene, a true feast for the eyes.
'A Feast for the Eyes' is a beautiful sight which brings warmth and joy to people’s hearts.
The first level of art appreciation is beauty in the eye of the beholder. Harmony between composition and hue is the first thing perceived by the eyes, and because it is a subjective perception, artists have never been able to clearly define the concept of ‘beauty’. Simply put, anything that brings joy is ‘beautiful’.
After the feast for the eyes comes joy to the heart as art appreciation advances from visual to mental perception. After the eyes have been stimulated, art enters into the needs of the soul. A Feast for the Eyes refers to external beauty, while Joy to the Heart signifies internal beauty. When we say “Joy to the heart, a feast for the eyes” in Chinese, ‘Joy to the heart’ comes first to express the idea that only when beauty is internal can it present a beautiful exterior. Only when the interior and exterior are as one can artistic creation directly engage with the self.
