The Sovereign Art Foundation at ARTHK11 is proud to present 2009 Sovereign Asian Art Prize Finalist and Moran Prize Winner, Vincent Fantauzzo and 2006 and 2008 Sovereign Asian Art Prize Finalists Laura Spector and Chadwick Gray.
The Sovereign Art Foundation has invited Vincent Fantauzzo back to use his talents to encourage creativity amongst the younger visitors to the fair. Vincent was a finalist in the 2009 Sovereign Asian Art Prize for his work Menacing Me and was the public vote prize winner of the 2008 and 2009 Archibald prizes. More recently he was the winner of the Packing Room Prize for his portrait of Matt Moran and the A$150,000 Moran Prize for his painting of Baz Luhrmann.
Last year Vincent and Baz recreated scenes from their motor bike trip around India painting with street kids. This year Vincent will, with help from visitors to the fair, be painting an 8.5metre long mural.
The Sovereign Art Foundation has also invited collaborators Laura Spector and Chadwick Gray who are known for their body of works, Museum Anatomy. Spector and Gray will create a new Museum Anatomy piece throughout Wednesday’s preview.
Museum Anatomy are works created by painting images of photographs of works from museums around the world onto the human body and then the painted body is photographed. The final outcome is sometimes unrecognizable as a human form. During the weekend Spector and Gray will hold a workshop with teenagers along similar lines but instead of painting directly on the body the teens will paint on casts of their own feet and legs.
The Sovereign Art Foundation was set up in 2003 to raise the awareness and profiles of artists around the region while raising money for charity. These two aims are achieved through The Sovereign Asian Art Prize. The first prize winner receives US$25,000 and the remaining 29 finalists are auctioned at a high profiled event with the funds being equally split between the participating artists and the Foundation.
The Sovereign Art Foundation has been funding arts programmes within community centres in Cambodia, India, Vietnam, Nepal and Hong Kong. It selects projects which use art as a means of education, rehabilitation and therapy for disadvantaged children. Starting this year The Sovereign Art Foundation will run new projects in Hong Kong giving it’s previous finalists an opportunity to work with various children’s groups to boost their self confidence and creativity. The collaborations between The Sovereign Art Foundation and Vincent Fantauzzo, Laura Spector and Chadwick Gray at ARTHK11 will be the launch of these new local initiatives.
