Alcaston Gallery is thrilled to announce that Irene Namok will make the long journey from Lockhart River to officially launch her exhibition. Alcaston Gallery presents new paintings by Irene Namok, one of the most exciting artists to emerge from far north Queensland.
In her new body of work, Irene explores Kutini Country, the rainforest that surrounds her home at Lockhart River. Being situated between a lowland rain forest and a spectacular beach, the environment around Irene has greatly influenced her artistic practice - bursts of vibrant colour that appear to leap off the painting undoubtedly reflect the beautiful tropical landscape.
Irene Namok’s desire to express the strong influences of her traditional culture and values in the world is similarly implied in this sublime selection of paintings. Looking above, looking inside not only reflects the physical act of looking at the country, but also knowing the country in heart and spirit.
Irene Namok has participated in numerous exhibitions in Australia and internationally, including her work being featured in a show at Booker Lowe Gallery in Texas, USA. In 2012, Irene’s work was exhibited in Where the art leads: new explorations by Queensland Indigenous artists at the Cairns Regional Art Gallery during the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair 2012.
