Born circa 1930 in Victory Downs, an outstation near Pukatja, Ernabella (in the APY Lands) South Australia, Sandy has lived in the surrounding area since before Kalka and Pipalyatjara communities existed. Yet, it was not until he reached his sixties that he picked up a paint brush for the first time, and discovered a passion for painting, as well as a strong need to tell his story.
In his relatively short career period Sandy has already developed a reputation as one of the most sought after emerging artists in contemporary Australian Indigenous art, catching the attention of high profile collectors and major art institutions alike, with his works having been acquired by significant public collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and Queensland Art Gallery.
Sandy Brumby’s approach to telling his story through art is highly individual, and reveals a strong connection to his country and his culture. His artworks are raw and bold, with thick applications of paint and a broad palette, revealing a love of colour and composition, and a strong spirit within.
These vibrant and powerful works are sure to attract all lovers and collectors of art – especially those with a keen eye for an exceptionally talented artist.
