Alcaston Gallery presents a hand-picked selection of exciting artists from Bentinck and Mornington Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The main language groups represented at Mornington Island Art are Lardil, Kayardild and Yangkall, and in 2OO5, the Kaidilt group of Bentinck Island women joined Lardil artists at Mornington Island Art, resulting in one of the most exciting art movements in Australia today. The exhibition features work by the incomparable and sublime Sally Gabori, whose expressive brushstrokes and expert use of colour transport you to her beloved country on Bentinck Island, proving why she is an international success. Drawing inspiration from their mother yet developing styles unique unto themselves, Amanda Gabori, Helena Gabori and Elsie Gabori emerge as rising stars in the art world, with Elsie recently a finalist in the 2012 Telstra Award. Bentinck Island ladies Netta Loogatha, Dolly Loogatha, Amy Loogatha and Ethel Thomas express their love of country through painting bursts of energetic colour, while Lardil artist Emily Evans paints her beliefs, culture and country in a sophisticated and contemporary style. All lovers of art are invited to immerse into the tropical seascape of far north Queensland with these vibrant new paintings, as the artists invite you deep into their country and culture.
