Alcaston Gallery is thrilled to show this outstanding new body of work in Tjunkaya Tapaya’s first ever solo exhibition, Nintintjaku – teaching, showing, passing on.
Tjunkaya Tapaya began working in batik, and became one of the most outstanding artists working in this medium, with artwork in several public collections, including a batik piece from 1994 which features in the current exhibition Threads: Contemporary Textiles & the Social Fabric at Queensland Art Gallery-Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane.
Since 1971, Tjunkaya has had her artwork featured in numerous exhibitions both in Australia and internationally, and she works in a range of mediums including Tjanpi (weavings), ceramics, punu (wood) and print-making.
More recently, Tjunkaya has chosen to increase her concentration on painting, and this focus has seen her become one of the most in demand female artists on the APY Lands. Tjunkaya has received artistic recognition for her painting; in 2010, an artwork by Tjunkaya was acquired by Artbank, and in 2011,Tjunkaya was selected as a finalist in the Togart Contemporary Art Award.
