Arpita Singh (b. 1937) Widely exhibited and appreciated, Arpita Singh is one of the best known contemporary artists in the country. Born in 1937 in Bara Nagar, West Bengal, she had her formal art training at Delhi Polytechnic. Her paintings are a perfect blend of the psychological and political face of the Indian society. The paintings are a woman’s view of the world around her, with the house and the lady of the house the central figures. The rest of the objects of everyday life join in as an allegory and icons of contemporary life and merge both the comic and the tragic and creates a world which is at the same time dreamlike and yet real. She is married to artist Paramjit Singh and lives and works in Delhi.
