She studied art at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan and is one of the young vibrant faces on the Indian Contemporary Art scene Installations and paintings are both an important part of her work. Mithu works increasingly from one motif leading to another through the play of free association. In the same manner, the spatial composition is made up of individual pictorial elements and stray elements are placed strategically outside of the main structure in a corner of the picture frame. There is no linear narrative or definitive meaning in her recent drawings. The scale of the pictorial elements is also distorted to alternatively provoke menace or comedy She has participated in group shows and has had a number of solo exhibitions in India and abroad. She has also won the Charles Wallace India Trust Award in the United Kingdom for 2000-2001 and was nominated for the Magna Young Achievers Award for 2003. Mithu Sen lives and works in New Delhi.
