Untitled I (2009) by Remen CHOPRA

Photograph on glass, steel, paper, graphite pencil

The centrality of the work deals with freeing oneself from the contradictions and holds of the post modern society, where , virtues start to loose meaning , and the dark valleys of self hood grip man , where violence , anxiety and antagonism take over and the virtues of self correction , become linked to the fanaticism of religion ,and the words peace, family and security become strangers in ones own world.

My concern is how this ‘war’ between the spirit and the ego has shifted to the brains of fanatics and is consuming each and everyone of us , There are no civilians and no place for neutrality and willy- nilly we become a participant in a world projecting this violence. I recall William Blake, where man seeks to be free from the myth of the ego, from separateness, contradiction and ignorance , gathering together dismembered parts in order to arrive once more at spiritual wholeness. To do this, “man requires a new Selfhood”, as Blake expressed it: “Self annihilation” was necessary
