Date: 5 Dec 2012 - 4 Jan 2013
'Traces of Man' is solo show for one of India’s most prominent artists, Rameshwar Broota. The exhibition will comprise of a selection of pieces from his photographic work; and a rare oil on canvas work from 1999, entitled; ‘Traces of Man - The Unknown Soldier - I'as the centerpiece of the exhibition. Broota is well known throughout South Asia and internationally for his unique technique of removing paint from a canvas rather than applying it to create the image. To create this effect Broota paints the canvas with thick layers of paint, and carves into the material to reveal the image out of the paint using a thin blade. This gives an overall look of a negative image of sorts, almost illustration-like in its detail.
This interest in the negative image is prevalent in Broota's use of photography as a medium. Broota's photography also deals with his focus of humanism - looking specifically at the human condition and how society works. In 'Traces of Man' XVA Gallery will exhibit photographs from multiple series of Broota's work, from 2003 - present. By showcasing his photography and canvas works together, the exhibition will show the conceptual scope of Broota's ouevre through two diverse medium.
