by Shalini Ganendra Fine Art
Location: Shalini Ganendra Fine Art
Artist(s): CHIN Kon Yit
Date: 15 Jun - 15 Sep 2012

SGFA launches the summer season with a showcase of the renowned picturesque depictions of Malaysian architecture and scenes, by  illustrious watercolourist, Chin Kon Yit.  The 58 works, all from the Sketchbook series, are part of the artist's personal collection.  Depicting Penang, Malacca and Kuala Lumpur, the watercolours are the last of the Sketchbook originals featured in the books:  Kuala Lumpur Sketchbook,  Penang Sketchbook and Malacca Sketchbook. These are the last of the original works.

Sketchbooks:

The important  Sketchbooks publications were the first to  marry  architectural explanation, (written by the legendary Chen Voon Fee), with the elegance of images.   The Sketchbooks (Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Penang)  have been hugely popular and successful in documenting the spirit and aesthetics  of Malaysian scenes.

About the Artist

Chin Kon Yit is one the most established and internationally renowned watercolourists of South East Asia.  His works are in the collections of the National Art Gallery of Malaysia, Central Bank of Malaysia, Standard Chartered Bank, HSBC, Oriental Bank and Petronas Gallery.  He has participated in solo and group exhibitions, locally and internationally, for over 40 years.

The continuing inspiration for Chin Kon Yit’s art has  been heritage architecture and artefacts as well as rural and urban scenes.  His refined painting technique allows him to depict intricate detail with unfailing accurateness, in watercolour. These works manifest his extraordinary artistic talent and tenderness for his subjects, everyday life in contemporary Malaysia and the vanishing scenes.

Chin Kon Yit – Revisited offers the opportunity to revisit these important  works of this prominent artist, and through his works, to revisit many of the familiar places and feelings evoked by his art.
