Shalini Ganendra Fine Art will present award winning photographer's, Nirmala Karuppiah, fascinating and thought-provoking series of images on Chinese opera in contemporary Malaysia. The highlight of this exhibition will be the KL premier of Karuppiah’s art film, Capturing Twilight. The film, produced and directed by Karuppiah, has already been enthusiastically received during the UNESCO Heritage Month 2011 in Penang, and at the Three Shadows Art Center, Beijing late last year.
The film, Capturing Twilight, and accompanying photographs, present the first part of Karuppiah’s continuing exploration and tribute to the traditional art of Chinese opera as performed in contemporary Malaysia. While Chinese opera icontinues to be performed and forms an integral part of Malaysia's heritage, it is nonetheless an endangered performance art in Malaysia. Karuppiah’s elegant eye presents valuable and candid perspectives of the aesthetic and narrative of the performance.
Award winning photographer, Karuppiah works primarily with black and white photography, using traditional documentary techniques, as well as contemporary formats.
Her unusual body of work involving the documentation of Malaysian dance troupes (presenting traditional Indian dance, a neglected performance art in Malaysia until recently), has brought much acclaim. She has traveled extensively to capture dancers, audiences, performances and silences. She also photographs urban and rural landscapes, investigating cultural dialogues and developments.
Her masterful interpretations of these subjects have brought her recognition as a formidable young photographic talent with a discerning and elegant eye. She is a Freeman Fellowship award winner.
