Explore Talekar’s Latent Worldview through Mandala

An artist from India, Sagar Talekar has studied fine art in Taiwan. He got his master degree in National Cheng Kung University and doctorate in National Taiwan Normal University. Since his debut exhibition in 2006, Talekar has had many exhibitions across Taiwan and has got a lot of attention.

The term ‘’Mandala’’ was originally Sanskrit, which means "circle". Both in Hinduism and Buddhism, mandala is a commonly seen figure in religious art. One of the basic mandala is a circle in the center surrounded by multiple geometric shapes. Another common mandala is a circle which contains a square and four gates. Also, mandala is a tool that helps religious practitioners to concentrate before they can experience heavenly meditation.

Moreover, mandala, according to Carl Jung—a renowned psychoanalyst in the late nineteenth century, is a manifestation of one’s personal subconsciousness. He also believed that through a painting in such form, the painter’s emotional problem as well as his or her true character would be revealed. In other words, abstract paintings may be not only a revelation of the painter’s inner thoughts, but also a series of invisible transformation in his or her personal view and personality—be it a consciously or unconsciously transforming process.

Some people may wonder why Da Xiang Art Space chooses to promote abstract art. We have our position of justification. On one hand, it is because abstract art can most directly convey the artist's inner state. Further, the unlimited possibility in abstract art usually allows viewers greater freedom to interpret the artwork with infinite imagination. In other words, there is no right or wrong while one appreciates a piece of abstract art, thus making this artwork much closer to his or her soul. On the other hand, we hope to broaden the variety of abstract art for those have long favored it. Also, we hope to secure a place for the public so that they can freely communicate ideas here. In conclusion, Da Xiang Art Space aims to constantly introduce high-quality abstract artworks in order to open a window for the public to the new world in 2012 and to deepen their understanding in abstract art.
