Poems of Hearts-Korean Contemporary Female Art
by Da Xiang Art Space
Location: Da Xiang Art Space
Date: 25 Nov - 25 Dec 2011

“Promoting contemporary art” has been Da Xiang Art Space’s ideal and direction since its opening. In recent years, we have further expanded its scope to many Asian countries and other continents around the world. So it is not surprising to see Da Xiang in-depthly promoting Korean contemporary art this year. Following the introduction of Lee Sangmin’s glass art as well as Kim Sunhyoung’s mixed media painting, this time Da Xiang will focus on contemporary female artists and in-depth discussion on their works.

"Female art" was gradually forming along with the rise of feminism in the nineteenth century and reached the peak in the seventies. Guerrilla Girl’s wild performance art is one of the most important representatives during this period and its success has turned "female art" a prominent school of contemporary art. Regarding this, we are pleased to have invited Ms. Jin Whuijeon, a well-known curator from Korea, to organize an exhibition on female art. In this exhibition, seventeen South Korean contemporary female artists are invited, some of whom play very decisive roles in academicism art. Also, this joint exhibition is aiming to present the female vocabulary in the twenty-first century.

Exhibited artists include Yoon Younghyei, Shin Rira, Shin Myeongkyu, Shin Kyounghee, Lee Choonok, Lee Jeongmin, Kim Yisu, Kim Jeungyeon, Kim Hyosook, Lim Jeoungeun, Lim Hyunjin, Choi Younjoung, Choi Yuhee, Choi Nari, Kang Sulsaeng, Hwang Sookyoung and Jang Eunj. They each have obtained their artistic vocabulary from different areas—from the living environment, from the tradition, or from their memory. Despite various thresholds, they have transformed energy gathered in their lives onto a flat canvas and have incarnated “aesthetics” with unique “writing” approaches in their paintings.

“Feminine writing” is often associated with such feminine media as knitting, cooking, flowers, etc. while these media have been mostly related to women according to the traditional social division of labor. Besides, “feminine writing” can be mostly about the female artist’s inner dialogue or on her concern for her body. Yet, these contemporary female artists from Korea have distinct ways to present their “feminine writing.” In other words, they have adopted brand-new language among the newest generations and have tried to re-interpret the hidden female world as well as values in the twenty-first century. Here Da Xiang Art Space sincerely invites you to join us to explore the inner world of contemporary female artists.
