I started this series of works by asking myself “What I am going to explore?”, “What do I want to express?” and “Is there any particular direction that I wish to go to?”. I searched through my collection of images and photographs, hoping that some images will appeal to me, revealing some information that I might have overlooked. However, I am not doing these works in the manner of art for art’s sake. I believe art has a purpose and making art involves having a goal with determination. Art does not come out of nowhere, or happens just by itself.
Sometimes in the middle of the night when I awoke from my sleep, I would go to my studio and spend considerable amount of time just looking at the works. Not that I long for the works to speak to me, but to decide if they stand a reason to exist. If they don’t, then why should I bother having them? Destroy it or paint it over!
Why I have chosen the subjects for this series of works probably is because each subject itself has a different destiny. They serve a purpose and a reason for their existence. Their journeys would mean nothing if they are not used, tried, experienced and sometimes, they are eventually abandoned.
Metaphorically speaking, a painting is the window I use to see the world, and the process of painting the journey. While I travel to observe the world, I in turn become the subject of other people’s study through my works.
