“When George Maciunas was very poor he bought cans of food from the grocery store that had lost their labels. They were, understandably, sold at a considerable discount. There was certain adventure to be had in taking meals with him during that period. Dinner might be string beans, chicken soup or cornedbeef hash. The adventure lay in opening the can to see what was inside. Ben Vautier had these cans relabeled as “Flux Myster Food”. If Fluxus is to be canned, at least for the moment, let it be canned in such a way as to leave the labels well enough alone and to maintain the sense of mystery inside.” The exhibition may also be viewed in this context.
I’m interested in changing meanings. My titles are often mental keys for thinking about the painting. It is the restructuring of visual language, a revelatory examination and presentation of a process of meaning – production; mapping the transmission of understanding and the unfolding processes of reception.
